Review-nowadays, someone is broadcasting something live wherever you look. Even the simplest smartphone can do the trick. As with all other technologies, the more powerful these types of devices are, the greater the demand for additional functions and features in a slim and compact form. The Mevo Start is possibly one of the recent devices that offers a serious bang for the buck. Let’s see!
What’s this?
The Mevo Start is an all-in-one solution for live broadcasts. With built-in rechargeable battery and wireless functions, it works as a completely standalone device. It has a built-in battery with a charge of up to 6 hours and is supported by a feature-rich Mevo app.
What’s in the box?
- 1 x Mevo Video Camera Start Live Streaming
- 1 USB-C to USB-A Cable
- 1 x Powered Adapter
- 1 x Microfiber Lens Cloth
- 1 x Quick Start Guide
On the back of the Mevo, starting from top to bottom, as shown below, the LED battery lights, the power button, the 3.5mm jack, a USB-C port and a micro SD slot.
Performance
The Mevo is compact and easy to handle. After loading, I downloaded the app and went through the signup and setup process. I connected first to the built-in Wi-Fi, and then to my network. Once I had done that, I was able to watch the video of the device through my smartphone screen. The available options also allow you to live stream on multiple platforms, and for my tests I used YouTube and my personal live streaming account through my website.
The following is a short video that will be streamed live on YouTube. Note the quality and the audio and video and close-up functions about 50 meters from the pastor and in the air on the balcony.
I also tested a one-to-one video/audio stream with a mobile hotspot between New York and Indiana and it worked perfectly. I used my personal live streaming website so the other person could watch it in Indiana.
The function includes the ability to create overlays and enlarge any part of the video by touching the desired area on your smartphone screen. Face recognition and motion tracking also work well.
Mevo Start Ethernet Power was not included, so all tests were wireless.
- The quality of construction
- Easy connection to streaming platforms
- Built-in battery
- App features, including face recognition and tracking
- Multi-camera option
- Audio playback
What I would change
I don’t know how to fix this, but the device heats up after using it for a while.
The USB-C to Ethernet adapter must be included in the scope of delivery
A bootable micro SD card must be included
Final considerations
When I first saw the Mevo and read the requirements for functions and capabilities, I was more than skeptical and did not expect much. I will be the first to admit that I was very wrong. This small, compact device delivers excellent video both up close and from a distance, and its built-in microphones do an excellent job with audio recording. The fact that I can use several Mevo cameras and easily switch between them on the smartphone screen is very attractive, because depending on the size of the device, I can place cameras in places that might otherwise cause problems. Add to that the touchscreen zoom feature and the different platforms I can stream to, and this little device is a win. I’ll give him a bravo and two thumbs up!!
